Messi Pukau New Jersey

Metrotvnews.com, New Jersey: Lionel Messi sukses memukau publik Amerika  Serikat di Stadion New Meadowlands, New Jersey. Meskipun gagal membawa Tim Tango menang, Messi melahirkan decak kagum 80 ribu penonton.

Jose Mourinho won’t admit it. Iker Casillas won’t admit it. Hell, even Pep Guardiola won’t admit it. But subconsciously everyone is sure of it - Barcelona will be crowned champions for the third consecutive season in May.

The remarkable consistency of the Blaugrana is set in stark contrast to the internal wrangling threatening to tear a Mourinho-sized hole through the centre of the Santiago Bernabeu. The Portuguese arrived as the Messiah, the antidote to Catalunyan domination, but his focus has slipped and, perhaps more pertinently, the realization has struck hard that Los Blancos just aren’t performing to a level that can even been considered in the same bracket as the Camp Nou giants.

No shame in losing to the best there has ever been, perhaps, but scant consolation for Florentino Perez and the Madridistas, who will need to blow the dust from that drawing board they seemed fated to continually return to.

Guardiola is defiant that Madrid will, somewhere along the line, remain a threat. In the Copa del Rey final, which will host a Clasico encounter for the first time in over two decades, perhaps. In La Liga, however, he is wrong; one side is certain to drop points between now and the end of the season, and it isn’t Barcelona.

Barca v Barca

Therefore, the definitive test that lies ahead for this astounding collection of talent is against history, and against records they have already begun to demolish. On an individual basis, the players are already striving to defeat their own inexorably high standards.

Victor Valdes has already shattered his own record for the most minutes played in the Primera Division without conceding a goal, managing 576 until Pablo Osvaldo of Espanyol netted past him in December.

Lionel Messi: 32 appearances, 37 goals, 18 assists, just past the midway stage

Pedro:
12 goals in last 12 league games, best scoring streak for a player since 1996.

Xavi: Became Barca's all-time appearance maker - 556, and counting

Iniesta: Just two goals short of his highest-ever scoring season
Further ahead, Andres Iniesta is just two goals short of his highest ever return in a single season of nine, with just under half the campaign to run. His midfield partner Xavi has overtaken Migueli’s appearance record at the age of 31, and is currently on 556 competitive matches, with that figure likely to keep on counting.

Pedro, for all intents a wide player, has netted 12 goals in his last 12 matches - the first Barca player to do so since a certain Ronaldo in season 1996-97. And alongside him the masterful, Ballon d’Or-retaining Lionel Messi has already netted 37 times in 32 competitive matches, as well as providing 18 assists - revolutionising what is deemed to be an extraordinary season in the process.

But Barcelona is about the collective, not the singular, and their feats just 21 games into this campaign continue to push the boundaries of what is deemed possible. Indeed, in many respects, Guardiola’s men are once again redefining the statistics they had already broken in the previous two years.

61 goals at the midway-point combined with only 11 conceded underlines their strengths at both ends of the pitch, while their total of 52 points from a possible 57 after 19 games beats their own record from 2008-09. Their best league victory for 50 years was equalled in the 8-0 destruction of Almeria, while the biggest ever-winning margin in an El Clasico fixture was clinched in November’s almost perfect, now infamous, humiliation of their rivals.

Barca's own points total of 99, which eventually proved necessary to clinch the 09-10 league title, is also an all-time record, one that is well within their reach in the current campaign. Their total goal difference that year ended as +74 - again, unparalleled, and again, with a current figure of +56, completely within reason.

A club record 10 consecutive away victories - once more, the previous benchmark was held by the class of 2009 - was achieved with victory over Hercules last weekend, which also edged them onto 15 consecutive La Liga wins - matching the great Blancos team of 1960-61, containing Di Stefano and Puskas, and one that can be officially overtaken by victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Erasing Madrid

And therein lies another fallout of Barca’s dominance that can make Madridistas miserable - their great adversary is ruthlessly forging a path through La Liga’s record books, rewriting as they go, and eliminating any mention of the capital club wherever possible.
The Blaugrana Standard -  La Liga Record Breakers
  • 61 league goals scored at mid-way stage
  • Only 11 league goals conceded at mid-way stage
  • 52 points accumulated at mid-way stage
  • 15 consecutive Primera Division victories
  • Club record 10 consecutive Primera Division victories away from home

By the end of the season, many more established achievements could well have been revised; Madrid’s 1989-90 side accumulated 107 goals, but Barcelona, currently on 67 for the season, must average 2.41 goals per game in their final 17 matches to exceed it. Their current median is 3.19, which is raised to 3.60 when only home encounters are considered - well within their capabilities.

Both clubs recorded 31 league victories in 2009-10 - shattering the previous best - but the Blaugrana currently rest on 19 wins from 21 games, and, frankly, haven’t even looked in danger of dropping points since facing Villarreal in November. And even Madrid's stat of six consecutive wins over their nearest challengers, dating back five decades, is in serious threat, with Guardiola currently holding five from five, and also 16 goals scored and two in reply.

And who can forget the 08-09's Triplete winning campaign, in itself chronicling a unique event in Spanish football history, and one that could potentially be surpassed this season - of course making them the first team to achieve, alongside their Supercopa win over Sevilla in August, a Quadruple in a single campaign.

My attempts to find weakness in this team defensively from last week - which may ultimately rear their head - are only relevant across the bigger picture. As a snapshot, the 2010-11 term could scarcely have run more smoothly for Barcelona, and their almost unattainable dominance sends an ominous message across Europe.

With February only just upon us, and even with another Clasico meeting (or two) due on the horizon, if this level of dominance is maintained until May, the debate can rest; Barcelona of 2010-11 can safely be regarded as the finest team La Liga has ever produced. The battle to attain that status is not against their rivals, however, but against their ability to sustain their current brilliance.

Further ahead, Andres Iniesta is just two goals short of his highest ever return in a single season of nine, with just under half the campaign to run. His partner Xavi overtook Migueli’s appearance record at the age of 31, and is currently on 556 competitive matches, with that figure is likely to keep on counting.
